Miracle on Cleveland St.: 40 Tons of Snow Expected to Hit Downtown Clearwater December 4th

With nearly 40 tons of snow and 2 toboggan snow slides, Downtown Clearwater’s Miracle on Cleveland Street is back on December 4th with Carolers, SANTA and a special Christmastrain to take kids over to the Christmas Village!

Clearwater, FL, November 9, 2009 - Who says it never snows in Florida? The Clearwater Downtown Partnership figured out how to make it snow at their inaugural Christmas event called Miracle on Cleveland St. last December. 20 tons of snow graced Cleveland Street along with 2500 attendees - many of which were children who came out in full force to ride the toboggan snow slide and see SANTA. This December 4th, there will be nearly 40 tons of snow, 2 giant toboggan slides and a play snow area for those infamous snow-ball fights!

Middle School Students Donate $650 to Clearwater Marine Aquarium's Rescued Sea Turtles

Middle school students do their part in helping our aquatic life:

 

  Kids in “Friends for Florida” presented $650 toClearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) to help take care of its rescued sea turtles. The group, made up of middle school studentsfrom Pasco and Hillsborough Counties, was started by friends who wanted to raise awareness about environmental issues. To raise the money, the kids held garage sales, lemonade stands, recycled aluminum cans and collected money outside of a local Wal-Mart.

The donated money will go toward medical supplies for sea turtles at CMA. CMA Sea Turtle Manager Danielle O’Neil said, “We truly appreciate selfless individuals such as these who help us take care of our sea turtles. We couldn’t do what we do without amazing community support like this.” “Friends for Florida” was founded in 2007 by the Mark family of Lutz. They have also raised $2,050 for Save Our Seabirds, Tampa Bay Watch and Big Cat Rescue. The group has also taken part in various clean-up and recycling efforts.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a Florida non-profit organization, dedicated to marine life rescue, rehabilitationand release, and environmental education. CMA is home to dolphins, sea turtles, river otters, stingrays, nurse sharks and more.

Rozario, Thomas Give USF Its Third and Fourth National Qualifiers

Rozario, expected to run Friday night in the 3,000 steeplechase, instead had to run Saturday morning after heavy rains and lightning forced the postponement of the race. She placed eighth overall to earn a spot at the national meet June 9-12 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. "It's exciting because I've always wanted to run there," said Rozario. "I didn't get to go last year (when she was hurt for the USA Junior National Championships). I still don't believe that I made it. Coach (Dena) Reif has been telling me that was our goal since the beginning of the season. It feels very good to see that goal come to life." Thomas, meanwhile, just squeaked by to get to Oregon, taking 12th overall in the discus at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. The top 12 finishers in each event at the East Prelim will advance to nationals to meet the top 12 finishers from the West Prelim. Rozario placed second behind Ashley Higginson of Princeton in the second heat, running a time of 10:30.36. The top three finishers in each of the three heats advanced to the Championships along with the next three best times. Todd Brazeal Hit A Three-Run Homer In The Third Inning

CLEARWATER - If there had been more games like Thursday's for the USF baseball team, the Bulls' postseason hopes might not rest on having to win the Big East Conference Tournament.

The Bulls got another solid outing by their starting pitcher, played sharp defense, and perhaps most importantly, the lineup produced the way Coach Lelo Prado envisioned.

The leader of the pack was first baseman Todd Brazeal, whose three-run homer in the third inning sparked USF (26-31) to a 10-5 victory against West Virginia (27-30) in the second round of the tournament and helped keep USF's season alive.

The Bulls will play Louisville tonight at 7.

"That's what we expected out of him, and we haven't gotten it," Prado said. "We're happy. We'll see if we can carry it over."

While the offense pounded out 12 hits after Prado moved Stephen Hunt into the leadoff spot and inserted catcher Andrew Longley and outfielder Sean Buckley into the lineup, Bulls starter Andrew Barbosa made sure the offensive tweaks didn't go to waste.

Barbosa pitched seven innings, striking out eight and walking two. Barbosa struck out five consecutive batters over the third and fourth innings.

"This could have been our last game," said Barbosa, who avoided the fate of starter Randy Fontanez on Wednesday. Fontanez pitched eight stellar innings but lost to St. John's as the Bulls managed only five hits. "When (Todd) hit that three-run homer, I got to settle down and go out there and just do what I have to do."

Watch Out Coachman Park, Relay For Life is Taking Over!

2010 Relay For Life of Clearwater gears up for its biggest year yet…

Coachman Park in downtown Clearwater will be the official host site to hundreds of community volunteers that will be rockin’ and walkin’ from 6 p.m. May 7 to noon on May 8 during the 15^th annual Clearwater Relay For Life event themed Rock on the Water, Cancer is a Beach!

The Clearwater Relay volunteer committee hit the track running after hosting its annual kick-off party at the Belleview Biltmore Country Club in November where 15 teams signed on including PostcardMania, Clearwater Beach Hyatt, The Oaks of Clearwater, Sunscreen Film Festival Committee, Clearwater Highschool and many more.

Over the past few months, Clearwater Relay has received generous support from local businesses. Abe Moussa, proprietor of Mugs on Missouri, hosted a Clearwater Relay fundraiser in December joined by Special Ed from Wild 94.1. Abe donated a portion of the evening’s restaurant sales. Special Ed sold copies of his Scary Karaoke Show CD and donated 100 percent of the proceeds. In total, nearly $2000 was raised for Clearwater Relay at this single benefit.
