Dragon Boat Institute Donates $12,000 to Beneficiaries

TAMPA, FLORIDA— On June 2nd the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute donated a tremendous $12,000 to its beneficiaries: FACTors Breast Cancer Patient Support Program at Moffitt and The Florida Aquarium. Last night each organization was presented with a check for $6,000 that was raised purely from online donations through the efforts of local paddlers during the annual dragon boat festival held on May 1st.

At the Howard Johnson Plaza Downtown a special thank you was given to the sponsors, volunteers, team captains and board members that contributed to make the 7th annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races a great success! 65 teams from across North America competed on May 1st in the annual festival that raised thousands of dollars for each cause. Christine Canevari, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute commented on the success of the pledge drive: “We can't thank ALL of the fundraisers enough for helping to raise money for the beneficiaries. That is what our event is all about, and without participants like you, our community-driven event wouldn't exist.”

An online Team Pledge drive at FirstGiving.com allowed paddlers and their friends, family, and co-workers to make quick and easy donations that brought in $12,000 to the institute. A contest was held to encourage teams and individuals to raise more money. The top individual fund-raiser was Jan Nicolosi-Fischer from the Tampa Blade Runners who accumulated an impressive $1,430 in donations. Second and third place went to Jonathan Monzon and Erin Kane who raised $525 and $499 respectively. The top team fund-raiser in the pledge drive was the Moffitt Flying Dragons who in just a few months raised $1,714.

Giving back to your community and benefiting The Florida Aquarium and FACTors is made easy through the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute. You can enter a team in next year’s annual event or even volunteer your time at upcoming events including Mini Regattas and the test event scheduled for October 23rd for the 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship, which will be held in August of 2011.

The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with two beneficiaries: FACTors Breast Cancer Patient Support Program at Moffitt and The Florida Aquarium. Free Airplane Ride

ST. PETERSBURG - Do your kids love to fly? EAA Chapter 47 will offer free plane rides for kids 8 to 17 as part of its Young Eagles program at Albert Whitted Airport on Saturday June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can pre-register or sign up that day.

Pilots have donated their time to fly the kids on half-hour trips that will take the kids down by the Sunshine Skyway, giving them gorgeous views of St. Petersburg and the beaches.

Rozario, Thomas Give USF Its Third and Fourth National Qualifiers

Courtesy: USF Release: 05/29/2010 Meet Results | NCAA East Prelim Information | Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomores Nicole Rozario and Jared Thomas followed in the footsteps of a pair of teammates as the University of South Florida track and field duo qualified for the NCAA National Championships during the third and final day of action at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Rozario, expected to run Friday night in the 3,000 steeplechase, instead had to run Saturday morning after heavy rains and lightning forced the postponement of the race. She placed eighth overall to earn a spot at the national meet June 9-12 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. "It's exciting because I've always wanted to run there," said Rozario. "I didn't get to go last year (when she was hurt for the USA Junior National Championships). I still don't believe that I made it. Coach (Dena) Reif has been telling me that was our goal since the beginning of the season. It feels very good to see that goal come to life." Thomas, meanwhile, just squeaked by to get to Oregon, taking 12th overall in the discus at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. The top 12 finishers in each event at the East Prelim will advance to nationals to meet the top 12 finishers from the West Prelim. Rozario placed second behind Ashley Higginson of Princeton in the second heat, running a time of 10:30.36. The top three finishers in each of the three heats advanced to the Championships along with the next three best times.
