Students' Garden to Help Local Charities

TEMPLE TERRACE - When Carol Brown heard about a New York City gardening project on a national TV news program last summer, the elementary school assistant principal knew she had to have one.

"Theirs was a vertical one, but we didn't have to have that," said Brown, of Temple Terrace Elementary. "We have all this land here."

Students and teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade gathered March 15 to plant the 30-by-30-foot garden on the school's grounds. The planting had been delayed several weeks because of cold and rain.

Jessi Rodriguez, a kindergarten teacher, said everyone was eager to get plants in the ground. Her class had some that had to be transplanted several times into larger and larger containers waiting for the planting day.
