Woolard: New USF soccer stadium OK'd for '11

USF athletic director Doug Woolard, who has been talking recently about adding a new $3.5-million soccer stadium to the ambitious package of facility upgrades, said Monday that he can now officially announce that USF has secured the funding to include soccer in this wave of construction.

That means USF soccer will have a new home immediately east of the athletic facility in time for its 2011 fall season. Woolard is saying that all the construction -- new stadiums for baseball and softball, the Muma Center practice facility for basketball and new practice fields for football -- will be completed a year from now.

The Volunteer Way is Looking For Volunteers in Moon Lake

MOON LAKE — The Volunteer Way held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new outreach center in Moon Lake last Tuesday.

"People in Moon Lake are kind of abandoned," said Martha O'Brien, assistant chief executive of the Volunteer Way, a charity that feeds and clothes hundreds of families each month.

"Most people don't get out of Moon Lake because they don't have transportation and there is no public transportation in that area," she said.

The center at 10008 Moon Lake Road has been partially open since the winter and is building services slowly, O'Brien said.

She said the organization is desperate for volunteers — so services at the new center have depended on the schedules of the thin staff.

"We need retirees," O'Brien said of her volunteer shortage. She said many volunteers offer their time on weekends, but she needs help during the week at Moon Lake and the agency's other locations. The organization has a hydroponic farm in New Port Richey to grow food for the homeless, if any gardeners have free time.

Raymond James Optimist Club Helps Deliver Smiles at Sallie House

Sallie House, a program of the Salvation Army under the St. Petersburg Area Command., was designed to be a safe haven for children ages birth to 11 years who have been removed from their home because of abuse, neglect, abandonment, or any unsafe home situation for a child.  But, in 2009, shortly after a move into a new St. Petersburg facility built and furnished for this age group, the age range for the home changed to 5 – 16 years.  Suddenly, there was a shortage of age appropriate beds, bedding, and activities for teenagers.

Don Rua, president of the Raymond James Optimist Club, named the Sallie House as the club charity for the 2008 - 2009 year.  Two fund raisers netted $1,082.40.  Initially, the club planned to purchase kiddie playground equipment, but after speaking with Sallie House Director Roger Windell, switched gears to suit the new age group.  The club presented the Sallie House with:

  • 3 Play Station2 consoles
  • 6 remote controllers
  • 3 memory cards
  • 6 games

  • 1 WII console
  • 4 remote controllers
  • 1 wireless sensor bar
  • 1 charging station
  • 3 games

The total costs for the gifts exceeded the funds raised; however, a 10% discount on all accessories and $25 off a WII Console from Best Buy and an extra contribution from a club member made it possible to deliver a game unit for each of the four wings of the house.  Children in residence opened the individually wrapped packages.  Even though the children knew the gifts were for the Sallie House and not for them personally, the joy and excitement ran high. Since the club’s mission is to focus on youth projects, it was a win all around.

Children may stay at Sallie House from one night to one year, depending on whether they can be reunited with their parents, placed with relatives, placed in a foster home, or adopted by a loving family. The dedicated staff at Sallie House is ready 24 hours a day – 7 days a week – with the comfort and care these children so desperately need and deserve. Their goal is to offer an atmosphere that is as normal as possible until arrangements for each child's long-term care can be made.  Quality game time helps make it so.

PAPA JOHN’S PIZZA SECURES THREE-YEAR DEAL AS OFFICIAL PIZZA SPONSOR OF NFL AND SUPER BOWL

Deal grants pizza company category exclusivity, rights to use NFL logos and trademarks in marketing and advertising

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 8, 2010) – Football fans can expect the upcoming NFL season to be even better, thanks to the company known for its “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza.” Papa John’s International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PZZA), which earlier this year entered into an agreement with the NFL as the Official Pizza Sponsor of Super Bowl XLIV, has signed a three-year agreement through the 2012 season as the Official Pizza Sponsor of the NFL and Super Bowl XLV, XLVI and XLVII.

The deal is the largest in Papa John’s history and includes category exclusivity among delivery and carryout pizza brands.

“The National Football League is the most highly regarded and popular brand in sports, with a commitment to quality that matches perfectly with the high standards of Papa John’s,” said Andrew Varga, Papa John’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Papa John’s has always prided itself as being the preferred pizza of football fans. This sponsorship takes it to the next level. This is by far the largest sports-related financial commitment that our brand has made and we believe this affiliation will greatly enhance our brand building efforts over the next three years.”

Earlier this year with its sponsorship of Super Bowl XLIV, Papa John’s recorded its largest single sales day in the brand’s history, selling more than 900,000 pizzas at its 2,800 U.S. restaurants.  Extending the NFL sponsorship will propel the brand deeper into the mindset of NFL fans everywhere, beginning with 2010 NFL Kickoff in September all the way through Super Bowl XLIV on February 6, 2011 and beyond.

“We are excited to welcome the Papa John’s brand to the NFL as an official sponsor,” Keith Turner, NFL Senior Vice President of Media Sales & Sponsorship. “We have appreciated Papa John’s local sponsorships with NFL teams over the years. We welcomed them into the national fold at Super Bowl XLIV and are pleased to extend the relationship into a long-term sponsorship.”

As a sponsor, Papa John’s will be able to use NFL logos and trademarks in its advertising and marketing. These logos include the NFL shield logo, as well as those of marquee league events, such as the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and NFL Kickoff.

Papa John’s is also the Official Pizza of the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams, Tennessee Titans, and Washington Redskins.

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PZZA) is the world's third largest pizza company. For nine of the last 10 years, consumers have rated Papa John's No. 1 in customer satisfaction among all national pizza chains in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Papa John's also was honored by Restaurants & Institutions Magazine (R&I) with the 2009 Gold Award for Consumers’ Choice in Chains in the pizza segment and was named 2007 Pizza Today Chain of the Year. Dragon Boat Institute Donates $12,000 to Beneficiaries

TAMPA, FLORIDA— On June 2nd the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute donated a tremendous $12,000 to its beneficiaries: FACTors Breast Cancer Patient Support Program at Moffitt and The Florida Aquarium. Last night each organization was presented with a check for $6,000 that was raised purely from online donations through the efforts of local paddlers during the annual dragon boat festival held on May 1st.

At the Howard Johnson Plaza Downtown a special thank you was given to the sponsors, volunteers, team captains and board members that contributed to make the 7th annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races a great success! 65 teams from across North America competed on May 1st in the annual festival that raised thousands of dollars for each cause. Christine Canevari, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute commented on the success of the pledge drive: “We can't thank ALL of the fundraisers enough for helping to raise money for the beneficiaries. That is what our event is all about, and without participants like you, our community-driven event wouldn't exist.”

An online Team Pledge drive at FirstGiving.com allowed paddlers and their friends, family, and co-workers to make quick and easy donations that brought in $12,000 to the institute. A contest was held to encourage teams and individuals to raise more money. The top individual fund-raiser was Jan Nicolosi-Fischer from the Tampa Blade Runners who accumulated an impressive $1,430 in donations. Second and third place went to Jonathan Monzon and Erin Kane who raised $525 and $499 respectively. The top team fund-raiser in the pledge drive was the Moffitt Flying Dragons who in just a few months raised $1,714.

Giving back to your community and benefiting The Florida Aquarium and FACTors is made easy through the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute. You can enter a team in next year’s annual event or even volunteer your time at upcoming events including Mini Regattas and the test event scheduled for October 23rd for the 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship, which will be held in August of 2011.

Rozario, Thomas Give USF Its Third and Fourth National Qualifiers

Courtesy: USF Release: 05/29/2010

Meet Results | NCAA East Prelim Information | Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomores Nicole Rozario and Jared Thomas followed in the footsteps of a pair of teammates as the University of South Florida track and field duo qualified for the NCAA National Championships during the third and final day of action at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Rozario, expected to run Friday night in the 3,000 steeplechase, instead had to run Saturday morning after heavy rains and lightning forced the postponement of the race. She placed eighth overall to earn a spot at the national meet June 9-12 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

"It's exciting because I've always wanted to run there," said Rozario. "I didn't get to go last year (when she was hurt for the USA Junior National Championships). I still don't believe that I made it. Coach (Dena) Reif has been telling me that was our goal since the beginning of the season. It feels very good to see that goal come to life."

Thomas, meanwhile, just squeaked by to get to Oregon, taking 12th overall in the discus at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. The top 12 finishers in each event at the East Prelim will advance to nationals to meet the top 12 finishers from the West Prelim.

Rozario placed second behind Ashley Higginson of Princeton in the second heat, running a time of 10:30.36. The top three finishers in each of the three heats advanced to the Championships along with the next three best times. Rozario's eighth-place finish among a field of 48 equaled her East Region ranking coming into the meet.
