Todd Brazeal Hit A Three-Run Homer In The Third Inning

By SCOTT CARTER | The Tampa Tribune
Published: May 28, 2010
Updated: 02:00 am

CLEARWATER - If there had been more games like Thursday's for the USF baseball team, the Bulls' postseason hopes might not rest on having to win the Big East Conference Tournament.

The Bulls got another solid outing by their starting pitcher, played sharp defense, and perhaps most importantly, the lineup produced the way Coach Lelo Prado envisioned.

The leader of the pack was first baseman Todd Brazeal, whose three-run homer in the third inning sparked USF (26-31) to a 10-5 victory against West Virginia (27-30) in the second round of the tournament and helped keep USF's season alive.

The Bulls will play Louisville tonight at 7.

"That's what we expected out of him, and we haven't gotten it," Prado said. "We're happy. We'll see if we can carry it over."

While the offense pounded out 12 hits after Prado moved Stephen Hunt into the leadoff spot and inserted catcher Andrew Longley and outfielder Sean Buckley into the lineup, Bulls starter Andrew Barbosa made sure the offensive tweaks didn't go to waste.

Barbosa pitched seven innings, striking out eight and walking two. Barbosa struck out five consecutive batters over the third and fourth innings.

"This could have been our last game," said Barbosa, who avoided the fate of starter Randy Fontanez on Wednesday. Fontanez pitched eight stellar innings but lost to St. John's as the Bulls managed only five hits. "When (Todd) hit that three-run homer, I got to settle down and go out there and just do what I have to do."

Shattered Silence
This is a group of high schoolers who have gotten together with Jared O'Roark at Marcia P. Hoffman Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Together we are working to show that although people may look different and people may think different when we get down to it, we are all outcasts at some point in our lives. THOUSANDS OF PIZZA LOVERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY VYING FOR A SLICE OF THE PAPA JOHN’S PIE IN RECIPE CHALLENGE

Three Weeks Remaining in “Papa’s Specialty Pizza Challenge,”
Winner to Receive Portion of Sales Dollars for Best Combination
of Papa John’s “Better Ingredients”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 25, 2010) – More than 7,000 pizza lovers spanning all 50 states think they have what it takes to create Papa John’s next menu item – and win a portion of the sales dollars in return. But there’s only room for one new pizza on Papa John’s menu. Which recipe will come out on top?

Last month, Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PZZA) asked its loyal customers to share their ideas for the next great specialty pizza on Facebook as part of the company’s first ever “Papa’s Specialty Pizza Challenge.” Thousands of recipes later – and with three weeks still remaining in the contest – Papa John’s finds itself sifting through a number of top contenders.

Recipes have been inspired by far-away places. There’s “The Big Texan” from a customer in Cambellsburg, Ind., “The Kentuckian” from a Papa John’s fan in Las Vegas, Nev., “Mediterranean Medley” in Dayton, Ohio, plus hundreds of interpretations of what constitutes a “Hawaiian” pizza.

Pizzas have also been named in honor of loved ones, like “Dad’s Ham & Cheese” in Lexington, Ky., “Mom’s Not Cooking Tonight!” in Overland Park, Ks., and “Grammy’s Favorite” in Valparaiso, Ind.

And then there’s pure creativity, such as “The New PB&J” from Augusta, Ga., “Kabobbin’ Kick” in Cuddy, Pa., and “The TNT! (Thin ‘n’ Tangy!) from Escalon, Calif.

“Every day there’s a new recipe, story, or name that catches our eye as customers have come out in droves to share their favorite combinations of Papa John’s ‘Better Ingredients,’” said Papa John’s Chief Marketing Officer Andrew Varga. “The passion for our quality pizza and fresh ingredients is evident in every entry.”

Through June 14, participants can enter “Papa’s Specialty Pizza Challenge” at www.facebook.com/papajohns

, where they will be asked to create and name their very own specialty pie on Papa John’s fresh, never frozen original dough with sauce, cheese and a combination of up to seven Papa John’s better ingredients, including:

  • Fresh-Packed Tomato Sauce: Made from vine-ripened tomatoes, which go from the vine to the can in an average of six hours

  • Cheese made from 100 percent mozzarella

  • 100 percent Real Meats: Bacon, Beef, Ham, Grilled Chicken, Pepperoni, Sausage, Spicy Italian Sausage
  • Fresh-Cut Vegetables: Onions, Green Peppers and Roma Tomatoes

  • Other high-quality ingredients: Including baby portabella mushrooms from Greece and black olives grown in the rich soils of southern Spain
  • But Papa’s Specialty Pizza Challenge isn’t just about recipes. Participants must also share in 250 words or less what makes their pizza so special for a chance to win. Judges will take the pizza creation, the pizza name and the story into consideration when completing their score sheets.

All entries are being featured in a gallery on Papa John’s Facebook page, from which “Papa” John Schnatter himself and his team of experts will choose ten semi-finalists. Those ten recipes will then be tested and tasted by Schnatter, a secret celebrity judge and other judges at company headquarters in Louisville, Ky. Schnatter, who personally developed many of the specialty pizza combinations currently offered by Papa John’s, and the other judges will trim the choices to the three best recipes, which will be showcased temporarily on Papa John’s menu (August 2 – August 29), with the ultimate winner being the highest-selling pizza!

And because the stakes – a portion of sales dollars from the winner’s recipe – are so high Papa John’s is offering the top three finalists a marketing budget of $1,000 to help drive sales of their respective pizzas.

The grand prize winner will also receive free Papa John’s pizza for life as well as a chance to appear in a “Papa’s in the House” TV commercial. For more details on “Papa’s Specialty Pizza Challenge,” including official contest rules, visit www.facebook.com/papajohns.

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PZZA) is the world's third largest pizza company. For nine of the last 10 years, consumers have rated Papa John's No. 1 in customer satisfaction among all national pizza chains in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Papa John's also was honored by Restaurants & Institutions Magazine (R&I) with the 2009 Gold Award for Consumers’ Choice in Chains in the pizza segment and was named 2007 Pizza Today Chain of the Year. Pulling It Together

For any NFL team, the offseason is one long and continuous (and increasingly busy) process of getting ready for the next regular-season opener. For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a big part of that process in 2010 is constructing an offense that is more explosive, more diverse and more consistent than the year before.

Josh Freeman says that goal is very much in sight.

The Buccaneers' top 2009 draft pick, now barreling towards his first opening-day start, Freeman formed that encouraging opinion after leading his team through its initial set of organized team activity days (OTAs) last week. Freeman himself has been working tirelessly since the end of last season to put himself in position to raise his game, and team management has helped out by seriously fleshing out his array of weapons. The difference was noticeable last week.

"The first day this year and the first day last year?" said Freeman. "We're light years ahead right now."

AL Quick Pitch: Rays win 6th straight, open AL East lead

    By Scott Boeck

The Tampa Bay Rays swept the New York Yankees in a two-game series and won their sixth straight.

Yes, the Rays won both at Yankee Stadium. Up until last week, they had lost six in a row in New York.

"This ballpark didn't treat us kindly last year," manager Joe Maddon said after an 8-6 win. "It was important to show that we can win here. It's important in regards to the mental factor."

Maddon has his club in great command of the AL East. The Rays have opened a five-game lead over the Yankees, and they've proven they can win at home and on the road.

The Rays improved to a remarkable 17-4 on the road and 30-11 overall.

"These guys are hot as a pistol right now. Anytime we make a mistake, they are on it," Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez said.

The East division is full of firepower. Four of the five teams - Rays, Yankees, Blue Jays and Red Sox - are above .500. And one of the perennial powerhouses - the Yankees or Red Sox - could be playing for the wild card if the Rays continue their streak.

    Also noteworthy in the AL:

    • DUEL OF THE DAY: In what was supposed to be a matchup of two premier left-handers - Red Sox's Jon Lester and Twins' Francisco Liriano - it became a runnaway for Lester. Lester threw his first complete game win of the season and needed just 98 pitches. Liriano exited the game with two outs in the fifth inning. With the victory, Lester lifted his winning percentage to .719, the best ever for a pitcher with at least 100 starts.

"That's great," Lester said without a smile. "But that's just a testament to the teams that I've been on. It's easy to pitch when guys score runs."

    • Employee No. 24 came through for the Seattle Mariners. Ken Griffey Jr., who according to a report was unavailable to pinch-hit in an earlier loss because he was sleeping in the clubhouse, got his 10th game-ending hit of his career. It was the first game-ending hit of Seattle's disappointing season.

Third Rock for Autism fundraiser set for Saturday in New Port Richey

    Published: May 19, 2010

NEW PORT RICHEY - Less than a month from graduation, Gulf High School seniors Steve Toth and Britt Smith have a lot on their mind - exams, saying goodbye to high school, planning for college, staging a seven-hour rock concert.

For the third straight year, Smith and Toth will take control of Gulf High's Des Little Stadium, 5355 School Road, to stage Project: Rock for Autism. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, May 22, for this year's musical fundraiser benefitting the University of South Florida Center for Autism and Related Disabilities.

With personal motivations to do something to help the growing number of families with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and personal involvement in the local music community, Toth and Smith organized the first Project: Rock for Autism as sophomores, along with classmate Crystal Rosado.

Last year, on the heels of the second annual Project: Rock for Autism, the trio was honored with Florida Holocaust Museum's Anne Frank Humanitarian Award.

"In past years these concerts have raised over $3,500 for various autism charities around the bay area and helping to bring awareness to our community about the disorder," Toth said. "Our mission is to spread awareness and raise money for a disorder that is usually overlooked, yet affects up to one in every 110 of our generation's children."

Congratulations PACE - Center for Girls

"I love Papa John's Pizza, not only because it tastes great, but also because I love the hot peppers that come with it and remind me of the pizza place we went to when I was a growing up in Maryland. I am a single mother of 4( 3 girls ages 13, 15, and 16 and one boy age 18).

For the past 6 years one or more of my daughters have attended the Center for Girls. The Center provides a safe positive place for them to spend time outside of school when I'm working full time. They learn things I can't teach them about how to grow to be strong health women, and see positive role models in areas of life I have no other access to.

All of that is well and good, I don’t intend to downplay all the wonderful things they do at The Center, however my selfish reason for loving the Center for Girls comes on the third Tuesday of the month when we attend Family Night. That's the one night that I NEVER have to figure out what's for dinner, cook it, or pay for it, and I know that all of the kids will eat it. It's Papa John Pizza! Even my son has attended Family Night. I hope you give them a discount as a non-profit organization. They deserve it and my family and many others are very grateful."

This is our "Submit Your Story" winner nominated by: Cori Toler

PACE Center for Girls provides girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy. PACE values all girls and young women, believing each one deserves an opportunity to find her voice, achieve her potential and celebrate a life defined by responsibility, dignity, serenity and grace.

MLB Odds: Tampa Bay Rays Big Chalk at Home Versus Indians

Tampa Bay remains the top team in the majors with a two-game lead in the tough AL East. The Rays are 200 favorites at home Monday against the Cleveland Indians.

The Tampa Bay Rays (26-11) are 4-1 in their last five games with three of the wins being close one-run affairs.  Joe Maddon’s club is atop the American League East standings and opens a two-game set in Monday’s home meeting with the Cleveland Indians (15-20), who are 5-2 in their last seven.

Gabe Kapler’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly gave him the game-winning RBI for the Rays, who cashed as 147 home favorites, in Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.  The right fielder struck out twice in his other two plate appearances.

Rays second baseman Sean Rodriguez had his team’s other RBI.  The nine-hole hitter’s double in the seventh-inning began the comeback victory after his squad was down, 1-0.

The game’s combined three runs plunged below the ‘total’ of seven, and extended the Rays' ‘under’ streak to 4-0-1.

Starting pitcher Matt Garza went six innings for the Rays and gave up five hits.  Dan Wheeler got the win for Tampa Bay in relief to improve his record to 2-0, and Rafael Soriano closed for his 10th save.

Price wins fifth as Rays edge Angels: Two runs on passed balls help righty tie for AL lead in wins

    By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

    05/12/10 11:41 PM ET

ANAHEIM -- David Price was 13 years old and in the eighth grade the last time the Rays won a series at Angels Stadium.

That series win came May 14-16, 1999.

Since then, Price has been to college, become the No. 1 overall pick of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and now he's an integral part of a solid, young Tampa Bay staff. On Wednesday, Price used his left arm to help the Rays earn a 4-3 win over the Angels to take the rubber game of a three-game series in front of 35,700.

In victory, Tampa Bay finished the trip with a 6-3 mark to move its road record to 15-4 on the season, and the red-hot club improved its Major League-best record to 24-10.

Durant High's Kaitlin "Scotti" Snapp and Ruben Garcia, along with Plant City seniors Haylee Dietrich and Blair Butler, were among the recipients of the scholarships. Each year in a partnership with Chick-fil-A and Dick's Sporting Goods, the county's athletic department is able to present $27,000 total to student-athletes.

Quarterback B.J. Daniels impresses during USF Bulls spring football game

By Greg Auman, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Sunday, April 18, 2010

It was against a "very vanilla" defense that couldn't so much as tackle him, but Saturday was an impressive night for USF QB B.J. Daniels. The sophomore-to-be threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns in leading the "South Florida" team past the "Bulls" team 49-31 at Raymond James Stadium. "I really didn't want it to be this much of a passing fest," said first-year coach Skip Holtz, who set limitations on his defense to help limit injuries. "But I was really impressed with the job that B.J. Daniels did as a quarterback. We all know he's a great athlete and what he can do, but I think he's starting to do some good things from a mental standpoint." Four of Daniels' touchdowns went to senior WR Dontavia Bogan, who caught nine passes for 228 yards, including a 77-yarder down the sideline for the game's first touchdown. Said Holtz: "Bogan really stepped up and did some great things."

    Up-and-down defense

The first-team defense gave up far too many big plays even while being limited to no blitzing and certain coverages. But it did score two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman S JaQuez Jenkins, a graduate of Lakewood High in St. Petersburg, returned an interception for a score, and LB Mike Lanaris returned a fumble for one. LB DeDe Lattimore returned a fumble to the 10, setting up a Mo Plancher touchdown.

Tampa Bay Rays 8 to 1 to Win 2010 World Series

    Matt Garza.(credit: Wikipedia.com)
    7 May 2010

The Rays have the best winning percentage in baseball so far this season.

The New York Yankees have played outstanding baseball so far this post-season as they have a .704 winning percentage through 27 games. However despite all of their success, they are not even the leaders of their division as the Tampa Bay Rays are 21-7 on the year so far.

One thing that is very head turning with Tampa Bay is that they are 12-1 on the road so far this year. Most teams play worse on the road when compared to their home record, but the Rays have been dominant so far although one seriously has to question if they can keep that kind of road winning percentage up for much longer.

So far the best offensive player for Tampa Bay has been third basemen Evan Langoria whose OPS is 1.050. Langoria has an impressive 7 home runs on the year and his batting average at this point is .356.

On the mound 26 year old Matt Garza has been the Ray best pitcher.

Garza appears to be on track for a career year as he is already 5-1 with a WHIP of only 1.070. His best season so far was in 2008, when the Rays made the World Series, when he went 11-9 during the regular season.

Home to Tampa International Airport (TIA), our main airport is able to accommodate over 17 million passengers per year, with an estimated 25 million passengers expected by 2020. Tampa International Airport has been recognized as the third best airport in the world by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, and IATA Skytrax named TIA as the number two airport in North America in 2003.

The FIFA World Cup is an international soccer competition in which 32 teams of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) compete. The tournament is held every four years, and Tampa Bay has been chosen as one of the finalist cities for the 2018/2022 competition. An estimated 36 billion people worldwide watch the FIFA World Cup, making it the most-viewed sporting event in the world. The last United States-hosted FIFA World Cup event occurred in 1994, and holds the record for the highest-attended World Cup event in history.
